Job Description

We are working on behalf of a well-established, privately owned, multi-location veterinary group in Virginia Beach, VA, that is launching a dedicated emergency and critical care service line and is looking to welcome its first ER-focused Associate Veterinarian. This is a strategic growth hire rather than a backfill, with a second full-time ER doctor planned by the end of the year to reach full 24-hour coverage. In the meantime, you will help build this service from the ground up, working alongside experienced ER-trained veterinary technicians and assistants on every shift, never as a solo seat. The practice operates from a large, open, modern facility with dedicated surgical suites plus treatment, recovery, and isolation areas, and the group is willing to invest in equipment to support your clinical needs. Case mix is true emergency and critical care, primarily referral-based, with cats and dogs only. This is a standalone, autonomous role suited to a confident emergency clinician who wants to be the decision maker on shift rather than a mentee, with a genuine opportunity to help shape and eventually lead the hospital's emergency service. The group is collaborative and clinically autonomous, with doctors trusted to practice medicine without heavy corporate oversight, and low turnover among its core clinical team. Shifts run on a three-by-twelve-hour pattern, with exact days and nights finalized with the successful candidate. Key Highlights • First dedicated ER hire as part of a brand new emergency and critical care service line • Standalone, autonomous role paired with experienced ER trained technicians and assistants on every shift • True emergency and critical care case mix, primarily referral based, with no walk-ins • Modern, purpose built facility with dedicated surgical, treatment, recovery, and isolation areas • Group open to investing in equipment to support your clinical needs • Collaborative, clinically autonomous culture with low turnover among core staff • Genuine opportunity to help build and eventually lead the hospital's emergency service • Cats and dogs only, no exotics or pocket pets • Sign-on bonus and relocation assistance open to discussion for the right candidate About You • DVM or equivalent degree with eligibility for licensure in Virginia • 2 or more years of emergency and critical care experience preferred • Comfortable working up ER and critical care cases independently with technician support • Confident being the clinical decision maker on shift rather than working under DVM backup • Excited to help shape and grow a brand new service line rather than step into an established one • Collaborative team player who thrives with autonomy Benefits • Competitive base salary of $180,000 to $200,000 plus production bonus • 401(k) with company match • Health, dental, and vision insurance • Generous CE allowance plus dedicated paid CE days • Paid time off • Sign-on bonus and relocation assistance open to discussion for the right candidate
