Veterinarian Medical Director - Houston, TX Starting at $170K + Quarterly Production | Medical Director Stipend | Sign-On + Relocation | No Negative Accrual The Opportunity An established small animal practice in Houston is seeking a full-time Veterinarian Medical Director to serve as the clinical and cultural leader of the hospital. This is a hands-on leadership opportunity that combines practicing medicine with mentoring veterinarians, influencing medical standards, developing the clinical team, and partnering with the Practice Manager on the continued performance and growth of the hospital. Previous Medical Director experience is not required. An experienced GP veterinarian with strong clinical skills and an interest in leadership can be considered and mentored into the role. The Leadership Role As Medical Director, you'll help shape both the medicine and culture of the hospital while continuing to maintain an active clinical presence. Responsibilities include: • Establishing and maintaining high standards of medical care and patient safety • Mentoring, coaching, and developing Associate Veterinarians • Partnering with the Practice Manager on hospital goals and performance • Supporting clinical protocols and workflows • Participating in quality assurance and case review • Supporting veterinarian recruitment, onboarding, and retention • Helping build an engaged and collaborative hospital culture • Leading through active clinical practice and client communication • Identifying opportunities for continued clinical and operational improvement You'll have support from both hospital and broader medical leadership rather than being expected to manage the hospital independently. Emerging Leaders Encouraged This is one of the biggest selling points of the position. Prior leadership, mentorship, or supervisory experience is preferred, but the organization is specifically willing to mentor an emerging medical leader. That opens the opportunity to an experienced Associate Veterinarian who may already be: • Mentoring newer doctors • Serving as an informal clinical resource within their hospital • Helping establish medical protocols • Participating in hospital decision-making • Interested in taking the next step into formal leadership For our Hound audience, I would make this highly visible because there are far more strong Associate DVMs ready for leadership than experienced Medical Directors actively looking. The Medicine The hospital provides comprehensive primary care for dogs and cats, including: • Preventive and wellness medicine • Sick-patient care • Dentistry • Elective surgery • Common surgical procedures • Dental radiography • Diagnostic imaging • Client education and ongoing case management • Fear Free patient care The practice emphasizes strong medicine, compassionate patient handling, client communication, and continuity of care. Compensation & Leadership Incentives The employer-published compensation structure includes: • Full-time salary starting at $170,000 • Quarterly production bonuses • Quarterly Medical Director stipend • No negative accrual • Sign-on bonus available • Relocation bonus or assistance available • Comprehensive benefits • 401(k) with company match • Student loan support resources Final compensation is negotiable based on experience, credentials, qualifications, and other relevant factors. This is a particularly attractive structure because the Medical Director has three potential components to compensation: salary, clinical production, and the additional leadership stipend. Leadership Development & Mentorship Medical Directors have access to structured training and mentorship designed to support both clinical and leadership development. Resources include: • Medical leadership development • Doctor mentorship • Clinical education • Dental education • Patient and team safety resources • Operational support • Professional development opportunities For a veterinarian moving into their first Medical Director position, this provides infrastructure to help make that transition successfully. Schedule • Full-time position • Hospital operates Monday through Saturday • Daytime hospital hours I would not publish a specific Saturday rotation because the source only tells us the hospital is open Saturdays, not how often the Medical Director is expected to work them. Who We're Looking For • DVM, VMD, or equivalent degree • Texas veterinary license or ability to obtain one • Active DEA license or eligibility • Strong small animal GP clinical skills • Strong communication and interpersonal skills • Interest in coaching and developing other veterinarians • Commitment to medical quality and patient safety • Collaborative leadership approach • Experienced Medical Directors and emerging veterinary leaders encouraged to apply Benefits & Professional Support Eligible team members have access to: • Comprehensive health benefits • Health and life insurance • Short- and long-term disability • 401(k) with company match • Mental health and wellness resources • Paid parental leave • Childcare and elder-care resources • Family-planning support • Veterinary-service and pet-care discounts • Student loan support tools • Continuing clinical education • Leadership development and mentorship Why Consider This Opportunity You don't need to already have “Medical Director” on your résumé to be considered. If you're an experienced GP veterinarian who has become the person other doctors turn to for clinical guidance, enjoys mentoring teammates, and wants a greater voice in how a hospital practices medicine, this could be a natural next step. You'll continue practicing clinically while gaining formal leadership responsibility, structured mentorship, and support from an established organization.
