Job Description

Veterinarian Medical Director - Lakeland, TN Leadership Stipend + Elevated Production | First-Year Bonus | Sign-On + Relocation | GP + Urgent Care The Opportunity An established small animal hospital in the Memphis area is seeking an experienced Veterinarian Medical Director to lead its clinical team while remaining actively involved in patient care. This is a hands-on medical leadership position for a veterinarian who enjoys practicing medicine but is ready to have a greater influence on clinical standards, veterinarian development, hospital culture, and overall performance. You’ll work closely with practice leadership while maintaining a meaningful clinical presence and helping shape how medicine is practiced across the hospital. Compensation With Leadership Upside The compensation structure is designed to recognize both your clinical production and the additional responsibility that comes with medical leadership. The package includes: • Competitive base salary • Annual Medical Director leadership stipend • Elevated production percentage • No negative accrual • Substantial first-year bonus • Sign-on bonus • Relocation assistance • Additional support based on experience and individual needs This creates multiple layers of earning potential beyond base salary rather than relying solely on a traditional Medical Director salary. The Leadership Role As Medical Director, you'll partner closely with the Practice Manager and hospital leadership while helping guide the clinical side of the practice. Your responsibilities will include: • Establishing and maintaining strong medical standards • Coaching and developing Associate Veterinarians • Mentoring doctors at different stages of their careers • Supporting veterinarian recruiting and retention • Helping create a positive and collaborative hospital culture • Supporting hospital performance and clinical operations • Using clinical and operational data to help guide decisions • Encouraging knowledge sharing and continuous learning • Maintaining high standards of patient care and medical ethics This is an opportunity to influence the direction of the hospital without stepping away from the medicine you enjoy. The Medicine The hospital provides comprehensive small animal care with a diverse caseload that includes: • Wellness and preventive medicine • Sick and complex medical cases • Soft-tissue surgery • Dentistry • Diagnostic medicine • Rehabilitation • Urgent care • Trauma and other time-sensitive cases Doctors have flexibility within their procedural caseloads and meaningful autonomy in making clinical decisions with their clients. Surgery and dentistry experience are particularly valuable for this position but are not required. Collaborative Clinical Environment Although you'll be the Medical Director, you won't be expected to operate in isolation. The hospital is part of a broader veterinary community that provides access to other clinicians for collaboration, knowledge sharing, mentorship, and clinical support. The environment is intentionally teaching-focused, with veterinarians supporting one another and helping develop both colleagues and future veterinarians. Clinical Resources The hospital is well equipped to support both comprehensive general practice and urgent-care medicine, including: • Digital radiography • Digital dental radiography • Ultrasound • Endoscopy • Dedicated surgical capabilities • Comprehensive dentistry capabilities • Hospitalization capabilities • Multiple treatment and examination areas Who We're Looking For • DVM, VMD, or equivalent degree • Tennessee veterinary license or ability to obtain one • DEA license or eligibility • At least three years of veterinary practice experience • Demonstrated leadership, coaching, or team-development ability • Strong medical judgment and ethics • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills • Genuine interest in mentoring Associate Veterinarians • Comfortable balancing clinical responsibilities with leadership • Surgery and dentistry experience preferred but not required Benefits & Professional Support Eligible team members have access to a comprehensive benefits package that includes: • Health and life insurance • Short- and long-term disability • 401(k) with employer match • Paid parental leave • Continuing education resources • Student loan support resources • Mental health and wellness resources • Backup childcare and elder-care support • Family-planning resources • Veterinary service and pet-care discounts Why Consider This Leadership Opportunity This could be an excellent next step for an experienced veterinarian who wants more influence without moving away from clinical medicine. You'll have the opportunity to mentor doctors, shape medical standards, influence hospital culture and performance, and continue practicing a diverse mix of GP and urgent-care medicine. Financially, the structure also recognizes the additional responsibility of leadership through an annual Medical Director stipend, elevated production percentage with no negative accrual, a substantial first-year bonus, sign-on assistance, and relocation support.
