Job Description

A modern, fully-equipped GP/Emergency hybrid animal hospital in Craven County, NC is seeking a Relief Emergency Veterinarian for a long-term maternity leave coverage assignment beginning February 2027. This state-of-the-art hospital operates as a true hybrid facility, running general practice during the day and full emergency service overnight and on Sundays. That hybrid model means no stressful day-to-ER transfers for patients, and you'll step into a well-oiled, consistent standard of care rather than a chaotic hand-off system. The overnight ER caseload is steady and varied, giving you the chance to flex real emergency and critical care skills in a hospital that's genuinely built for it. As the sole doctor on shift, you'll be backed by a strong, layered technician team, three techs at 6pm, tapering to a dedicated overnight tech from 2am until reinforcements arrive at 7am, so you're never truly on your own. The hospital is fully equipped to match the pace of emergency medicine, including an oxygen cage, CO2 surgical laser, CT scanner, ultrasound, and digital radiography, giving you the diagnostic and surgical tools to practice at the top of your license. This is a high-demand, high-impact opportunity: with a colleague heading out on long-term maternity leave, the overnight ER schedule needs reliable, skilled coverage for an extended stretch starting in February 2027. You'll work overnight shifts Tuesday through Sunday, plus Sunday daytime hours, with predictable 14.5-hour and 10.5-hour shift blocks. No dedicated break is scheduled, but a bed is available on-site for downtime between cases. Key Highlights • Fully-equipped GP/Emergency hybrid hospital in Craven County, NC • Long-term maternity leave coverage beginning February 2027, huge ongoing need • Overnight ER shifts Tuesday-Sunday, plus Sunday daytime (24-hour) coverage • Sole doctor on shift, backed by a strong, tiered technician support team • Oxygen cage, CO2 surgical laser, CT scan, ultrasound, and digital radiography on site • Bed available on-site for downtime during quieter stretches • Competitive flat rate of $2,000 per shift About You • DVM or VMD (or equivalent) from an AVMA accredited university • Hold or be eligible for a Veterinary State License in North Carolina • Solid emergency and critical care skillset, comfortable with pyometras, C-sections, foreign body surgeries, and similar emergent procedures • Confident working independently as the sole doctor on shift • Open to examining and treating exotic patients (guinea pigs, rabbits, rats, lizards); prior exotics expertise not required, just a willingness to help • Comfortable discussing alternative treatment plans and financing options with budget-conscious clients • Able to lift 40+ pounds Benefits • Access to more relief opportunities than you would typically secure independently • Personalized hospital matching based on your clinical style and preferences • Support with rate negotiation to maximize earning potential • Administrative coordination handled on your behalf • Fast and reliable payment for your shifts • Option for sustainable long-term partnership or one-off shifts•
