Dogwood Veterinary Specialty and Emergency is seeking an experienced Emergency and Critical Care Veterinary Technician to join our growing specialty hospital in Marietta, Georgia. What You'll Do As an Emergency and Critical Care Veterinary Technician, you'll provide advanced nursing care for critically ill patients while supporting Emergency, ICU, surgical, and specialty services. Emergency and Critical Care Perform emergency triage and critical patient assessment Stabilize and monitor critically ill and hospitalized ICU patients Respond to shock, trauma, respiratory distress, sepsis, cardiac emergencies, GDV, toxicities, neurologic emergencies, and other life-threatening conditions Assist with RECOVER CPR and advanced life-saving procedures Administer CRIs, fluid therapy, blood products, and emergency medications Establish IV access and monitor fluid balance, urine output, and vital parameters Recognize changes in patient condition and communicate concerns promptly Monitor patients using ECG, capnography, pulse oximetry, Doppler, invasive blood pressure, temperature, and advanced monitoring equipment Monitor oxygen-dependent patients, transfusions, and continuous therapies Assist with emergency and specialty surgical procedures Provide anesthesia monitoring, perioperative care, pain management, and post-operative stabilization Support advanced critical care therapies under clinician direction Perform in-house CBC, chemistry, coagulation, blood gas, urinalysis, and cytology testing Assist with digital radiography, ultrasound, and additional diagnostic procedures Collect and properly handle diagnostic samples Prepare and monitor critically ill patients throughout diagnostic procedures Maintain accurate electronic medical records and patient documentation Partner with Emergency Veterinarians, Board-Certified Criticalists, boarded specialists, and fellow technicians Support specialty teams caring for complex medical and surgical patients Communicate patient status and treatment changes clearly with the medical team Provide thorough shift-to-shift patient handoffs Maintain efficient patient flow while delivering exceptional nursing care Communicate compassionately with clients during stressful and emotional situations Advocate for patients and contribute to a culture of teamwork, accountability, and clinical excellence What We're Looking For Required 3–5 years of Emergency, ICU, Urgent Care, or Specialty Veterinary experience Strong triage, patient assessment, and emergency nursing skills Proficiency with drug calculations, CRIs, anesthesia, IV catheter placement, and diagnostics Experience caring for hospitalized or high-acuity patients Calm, organized, and decisive under pressure Strong communication and teamwork skills Ability to work effectively and independently overnight Passion for Emergency and Specialty Veterinary Medicine Preferred Licensed, Registered, or Certified Veterinary Technician RECOVER CPR certification Advanced anesthesia experience Emergency or Specialty CE Interest in pursuing VTS certification Early-career technicians: We encourage you to watch for future opportunities that better align with your current experience level. Physical and Work Environment This is an active veterinary hospital environment. Candidates should be comfortable with: Lifting, carrying, and restraining animals up to 50 lbs.; assistance/equipment available for heavier patients Standing, walking, bending, kneeling, reaching, and moving throughout the hospital for extended periods Handling fractious, fearful, injured, and medically fragile animals Cleaning, disinfecting, stocking, and maintaining treatment areas Exposure to animal hair, dander, saliva, urine, feces, blood, bodily fluids, and medical waste Working around veterinary cleaning products, disinfectants, medications, and other hospital chemicals Following infection-control procedures and wearing appropriate PPE Remaining alert and responsive in a fast-paced, high-acuity overnight environment Exposure to animals, allergens, bodily fluids, medical waste, and veterinary cleaning products is a routine part of working in Emergency and Specialty Medicine.
