Requirements
We are working on behalf of a spacious, modern, AAHA-accredited small animal hospital in San Diego, CA that is looking for an experienced Veterinary Medical Director to guide its team into the next chapter. This is a full-service hospital with more than 40 years of history in its community, a loyal client base, and an experienced support team already in place, so you are stepping onto a solid foundation rather than into a rebuild. As Medical Director, you will set and uphold the standard of medicine, mentor the doctors and technicians around you, and partner closely with a collaborative Hospital Manager on weekly priorities and hospital protocols, from intake through to discharge. You will still enjoy a meaningful clinical caseload across preventive care, internal medicine, dentistry, and surgery, supported by an in-house lab and pharmacy. The hospital is part of a large national network, which means local medical autonomy with the resources, CE, and career pathways of a bigger organization behind you. Compensation reflects the role: a strong base salary, a monthly Medical Director stipend, and quarterly production with no deficit carryover, plus generous signing, retention, and relocation packages for qualified candidates. Key Highlights • Lead an established, AAHA-accredited small animal hospital • Solid foundation with a loyal client base and experienced support team in place • Genuine medical leadership with local autonomy • Close partnership with a collaborative Hospital Manager • Balanced role blending leadership time with clinical medicine • In-house lab and pharmacy plus full surgical and dental capabilities • National network resources behind a locally led hospital • Monthly Medical Director stipend on top of base salary and production About You • DVM or VMD from an accredited college or university • Current California veterinary license, or eligible to obtain one, plus DEA registration • Proven clinical experience, with leadership or mentoring experience a strong plus • Excellent diagnostic, surgical, and dental skills • Confident communicator who can rally a team and build client trust • Interested in the business side of running a high-quality hospital Benefits • Base salary of $215,000 to $245,000, based on experience and leadership capabilities • Monthly Medical Director stipend • Quarterly production with no deficit carryover • Signing, retention, and relocation packages of up to $100,000 for qualified candidates • Medical, dental, and vision insurance plus 401(k) with discretionary contribution • Paid parental leave for birth, adoption, and foster • CE stipend, career development resources, and 24/7 wellbeing support
